Hello,

I think I killed my sons PS3. I got a Teensy ++ 2.0 and was following Bailey's guide to get it flashed from 4.8 to 3.55 and was having problems.

At first I was able to get the chip to show up correctly in the downgrade tool but after awhile it no longer gave me the right name and code because it went to manufacturer 'unknown'. I was getting reads in the downgrade tool that didn't match many times. I kept checking my wiring and driving myself crazy questioning myself over and over until I knew it was all right.

I finally got 3 good reads in a row Wednesday night and patched the file and tried to write it back but the tool stopped several times @ 768k and the downgrade tool froze up in Windows 7. I killed the PS3 and the program. I got frustrated, removed all of the wires from the system, put it together to the point I could connect it to the TV to check and make sure it still worked and it did. I was able to play the pinball game in it.

So, I decided to try again next day. At first I was getting 'unknown' in the downgrade tool. Then it saw it fine. Had to go to bed for work next day and since, it doesn't see the damned chip right cause it's 'unknown'. Got annoyed again last night, disconnected all wires and now I'm getting 3 beeps and flashing red light.

I have a good soldering station with variable temp heat gun and followed an ifixit article to heat the board and cpu\gpu, I've also grounded PA0 and still get the same thing. Can someone please help!!!!!

I feel so bad and guilty because he sunk $80.00 into a new controller and other things and I'm broke. I thought I'd be the 'cool dad' and make things better and usually do with these things but, I may have really screwed things up this time!!!

IMPORTANT NOTE: when I had the Teensy connected and before removing it from the system I did have a green light with no beeps.

Thanks for the step-by-step explanation of how you arrived at this issue @Jack987 you'd be surprised how many people post something similar and leave out all the important details. :p

Anyone can chime in with advice until then, but I'm going to mention @racer0018 so he'll see this next time he comes online because IMO he's the perfect person to assist you as he's had many years of experience repairing PS3 consoles. ;)

Thank you PSXHAX. I was in the business of primarily fixing laptops and building custom desktops for years until the owner of the shop passed away a couple years ago. Since I've developed really bad arthritis in my hands, part of getting old. I know how important it is to get as much detail about a problem as possible to assist in fixing it. I also know when I'm in over my head with something and to ask for help.

I hope @racer0018 may be able to help. I can get any photos, data, logs or anything else needed to assist in diagnosis.

I did question myself before I got into this because of the physical demands but I took it a day at a time and had to quit when it hurt really bad but, I used to mod DirecTv and Dish receivers all the time and the solder pads were much smaller. So, I knew how rough that'd be. I'm also very familiar with dumping TSOPS and modifications of the contents as well. These ARE very different and seem to me to be more complex but, I'm reading and learning a lot.

To temporarily fix my mistake, I took my tax payment and bought my son a replacement PS3 that's newer from a guy on Craigslist. It's a CECH-2101A with a 120GB HDD and he's happy and teasing me that I won't be opening it up!!!! ;) I DO hope to get the other fixed and working to sell it and get the states money back LOL!!! Hope to hear more from anyone soon. Thanks for the site and access.

Can u post photos of your soldering ?, did u not damage/overheat any pads ? only option is now to check teensy if it's not damaged , getting older laptop with win XP ;) not VM :p and try to upload NOR again. And for crying out loud DL UFPG 4.60 installing it and using it much faster way.

As I said earlier I've removed the Teensy from the system and I do not believe I've burned anything off the board in terms of pads. What are some checks for damaged Teensy? It shows up in Windows as it should and hitting the button disconnects it as well. Unplugging from USB and plugging back in after disconnect it shows up again. My Win 7 setup is an older HP headless desktop I RDP into and connect the Teensy directly to the front USB port.

I will also check out the UFPG 4.6.

Thanks for replying.

have u validated dump all checks have been OK ? what tools have u used ? sometimes AV makes lost of problems with tools that are used , only option I can see is try different laptop/PC resolder back teensy and flash it again until it comes back to life , while soldering have u used flux ? did any droplets of solder are not making shorts ? finally it could be as well damaged NOR but it's highly unlikely.

Shoot Racer a direct message as he is a busy guy.

Good Luck with everything.

Resolder Teensy, Reflash NAND/NOR, Reflow GPU & CPU....
Your Error Code could either be a faulty written NAND/NOR or a common YLOD. Almost any fat will end up there, thats why you should try the reflow...

I cant imagine the teensy is your problem, as my teensys here do a lot more things like homeautomation ;)
