It's been just under a year since the last update went live, and today Sony pushed a PS3 System Software 4.83 update which likely 'improves the quality of the system performance' similar to their last OFW revision meaning DO NOT UPDATE if you want to use PS3 Custom Firmware (CFW), downgrading, homebrew, Webkit exploits, etc. :nolove:

:poll: In order to gauge interest on the PlayStation 3, all members are invited to VOTE in today's POLL which asks: Are you interested in reading PS3 News (CFW, Spoofer, etc) updates?

There is no official changelog nor confirmation at the moment on whether this latest PS3 update may be the result of Sony's recent PSN ID Change program, or if it patches any PlayStation 3 hacks such as the PS3Xploit Tools which allow users to exploit their console to utilize PS3 homebrew including MultiMAN 4.82 and Rebug 4.82.2 REX/D-REX.

Also if anyone tests out online PlayStation 3 version spoofers for PSN access and to help avoid bans let us know if they're working, or try the How To Go Online PSN After 4.82 Update OFW Tutorial although historically PSN works for a brief period (a week or so) after each PS3 Firmware update goes live.

As always, we'll revise this article when Sony updates their page with the official PS3 System Software Update 4.83 changelog alongside confirmation from PS3 scene developers on what's patched or not patched in this latest PlayStation 3 4.83 Firmware version.
 Update: As expected, Sony's official PS3 4.83 changelog states the following:

Main features in system software update version 4.83:
  • This system software update improves the quality of the system performance.

Found this from the psxeploit team

RECOMMENDATION FROM PS3XPLOIT TEAM: FOR THE MOMENT, DO NOT UPDATE TO 4.83 UNLESS YOU HAVE DECIDED TO GIVE UP USING HAN PERMANENTLY ON THE CONSOLE.

After a look at the update files & preliminary tests, I am afraid I am bearing some bad news for HAN users playing online.

1. It would appear that s@ny patched one of the 2 webkit exploits we currently use to trigger ROP chains.
It means that we need to replace this exploit in order to get any ps3xploit tool working on 4.83. Work is already under way, obviously no ETA at this stage. Please don't ask.

2. The kernel is completely untouched. No changes to either lv1 or lv2 which means CFWs will be easier to make. That's also good news for devs with any promising kernel vulnerability under investigation.

3. Changes were made to vsh as usual & they seem extensive enough to suspect that they may have patched the HAN vulnerability as well. We have not yet had time to look into the matter at all but if they did, HAN might be gone for good past 4.82, leaving only CFW2OFW conversions installable & runnable on 4.83 whenever the patched webkit exploit gets replaced.

In conclusion, the changes brought by the 4.83 update mean that anyone updating will lose usage of HAN, and possibly permanently until a kernel exploit comes out. Cfw2ofw conversions will be the only installed games that will still be working after updating.

The nature of this update is upsetting our 4.0 release plans somewhat. It's still very early stages in our investigations & there are still many unanswered questions for the moment. I will keep you all posted whenever I have additional information to share.

Grabbed one PS3 on high firmware and cfw-ed it at 4.82, no more cheap JB consoles I guess

That said many sellers probably wouldn't have powered up their PS3 for months.

2000 series are pretty rare at this point in time anyway, so people are waiting for the 'temporary' exploit. (Happy owner of one 2500 (main) and 2100 (backup))

You'd think they'd just give up and make/release an open dev kit or something after x years. Imagine unhindered access to a ps2 for example. Wouldn't be very thrilling but it would be interesting.

@bandzior85 yeah and gamers/users on Metacritic gave it a 2.5 out of 10. Nothing worth buying to play on ps3 hasn't come out in like 4yrs maybe more

@wwenze -- where is that "pretty rare" info coming from? because on ebay there's always dozens if not hundreds of them for sale every single day and cheap. I should know, I buy at least a couple every week and prior to this year I would buy like 4 to 8 every week. I don't buy more now because there isn't a demand NOT because they're hard to find or pricey, they're not....at all.
