Just a day after the 3.72 PS Vita Firmware update and following their previous revision, today Sony pushed live a new PS3 System Software 4.85 Update and although their PlayStation Site hasn't been updated with it yet chances are the changelog includes more of the usual 'improves the quality of the system performance' security fixes.

:alert: Needless to say, it's NEVER a wise idea to update PlayStation Firmware in order to make use of such things as PS3 Custom Firmware (CFW), downgrading, homebrew, Webkit exploits, etc.

Download: PS3 Firmware 4.85 (EU) Update / PS3 Firmware 4.85 (US) Update / PS3 Firmware 4.85 (AU/NZ) Update / PS3 Firmware 4.85 (JP) Update / dev_flash-485.zip (165.2 MB - Extracted Hashes) via VTSTech

As always, if anyone tests out PS3 version spoofers for PSN online access and to help avoid bans let us know if they're working or give THIS tutorial a try... although historically PSN works for a brief period (a week or so) after each PS3 Firmware update goes live so we'll update this article as PlayStation 3 scene devs further examine it and report their findings.

 Update: Sony's official changelog for PS3 Firmware 4.85 is now available, and as expected states only the following:

System Software Update 4.85

Main features in system software update version 4.85:
  • This system software update improves the quality of the system performance.
Spoiler: PS3 4.85 OFW

Apparently this update doesn't affect homebrew.

There have been regulatory changes in the EU regarding credit card payments. Since the PS3 and Vita still have PSN access for buying games, they would need minor updates to comply with those changes. Nintendo only released their updates for the EU Wii U and 3DS, but maybe Sony is just releasing the changes in all regions.

I made a horrible choice. I tried to download the official 4.85 in my CFWed PlayStation, but now it's stuck in an infinite download loop, and I can't do ANYTHING.

I've tried the factory reset, but every time I try to do it, it only appears "The previous install operation was canceled. The system is attempting to install again. Do not turn off the system. After the install operation has completed, the system will automatically restart."

And when it comes to 48% progress, it pops up "An error occurred during the update operation. (8002F334)."

Someone please help!!
