In contrast to Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Series X console that will also play original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games at launch, Sony CEO Jim Ryan confirmed in a Famitsu Interview following the PlayStation 5 Showcase that PS5 won't natively support PS1, PS2 nor PS3 games and as previously hinted will have limited backwards compatibility with past generation PlayStation consoles... including a lack of support for PS1 / PS2 / PS3 game discs on the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive Model.

Just a few weeks prior to this discouraging news, a since-removed Ubisoft Leak also stated the following to quote:

"PlayStation 4 players will be able to join multiplayer games with PlayStation 5 players. Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games."

Equally disheartening to longtime PlayStation hardware consumers is confirmation directly from Sony that the DualShock 4 (DS4) Controller is also not compatible with PS5 games. :(

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan in the Famitsu Interview, 99% of PS4 titles are compatible with PlayStation 5... however, when asked about PS5's compatibility with PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles he stated the following roughly translated:

"We have been building devices with a focus on PS5-specific engineering. Among them, PS4 already has 100 million players, so I thought that I would like to play PS4 titles on PS5 as well, so I introduced PS4 compatibility.

While achieving that, we focused on incorporating high-speed SSDs and the new controller "DualSense" in parallel. So, unfortunately, compatibility with them has not been achieved."

As Arstechnica points out based on Jim Ryan's Time Magazine 2017 Interview this lack of affection for older generation consoles is nothing new with him, where he stated to quote:

"When we've dabbled with backward compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much. That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?"

Here's to hoping $ony doesn't intend to charge people yet again on PS5 for PlayStation games already paid for on past generation consoles like with PS One and PS2 Classics, PSN Ports and even PS1 Emulation in PS4 Games as discovered by scene developers months back.

uh, ok sony so you dont want to make emulators for your older consoles even PS2 and PS1 as they are the easiest consoles to emulate but the homberew community unlocked that feature to play FOR FREE all our copies and not pay to a cent on copy all of us already have.

you tell us that the ps3 architecture are really hard to emulate but the PC community build for free RPCS3 emulator that work amazingly with no workers behind the project.

you know what sony? you just lazy company i wish that when the PS5 release xbox will crush you.

I played several PS2 games on my PC while waiting for the updated releases. THe most recent was Resident Evil Code Veronica X. Playing the older one and then seeing what Capcom delivers on modern hardware helps you appreciate the remake. Ditto for Resident Evil 2 and 3. I would appreciate being able to do it all on one box.

Some older games are outstanding as games, separate from the graphics. They have yet to be remade or may never see a remake due to rights issues. Backwards compatibility is the most convenient way to access them.

I'm convinced that you will continue to see remakes driving the market because there is strong consumer interest. Backwards compatibility is a piece of the interest. Microsoft and the xbox crowd get the win for this issue. Sony will have to succeed on other merits.

let's just hope that ps1 & ps2 games bought in psn will works with ps5

@blimblim04
not everyone has a privilege to play the old games on there generation, i think it's not of more than nostalgia, for example final fantasy x maybe others didn't get the chance to play it with an actual ps2 hardware that's why they release it to next gen and other console

Hum, personnaly I don't care that much for PSx with x <=3 games on PS5, I mean you've got a modded PS3 to do that, or you have your original console, the con is that you'll have multiple gaming platforms on your living room

I can understand that they may not want to implement backwards compatibility if there isn't huge interest in it but even including DualShock 4 controllers and the like to the list of incompatible things is a little disappointing.

Apparently the "DualSense" is in fact ZeroSense... Was hoping for finally retrocompatibility too... If it wasnt the exclusives the ps5 would be dead already comparing to xbox. Very disappointing
