During their Technical Presentation by Mark Cerny earlier today, Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro featuring a GPU upgrade, advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution alongside the MSRP and launch date outlined below! 🥳

From Sony Interactive Entertainment Platform Business Group CEO Hideaki Nishino, to quote:

Over the last four years since the launch of PS5, we’ve worked hard to continuously evolve the console experience and deliver the great games our players expect from us.

Today, I’m incredibly proud to announce the next step in that evolution and welcome PlayStation 5 Pro to the PlayStation family – our most advanced and innovative console hardware to date.

PlayStation 5 Pro Console - Reveal Trailer

We developed PS5 Pro with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind – as many have asked for a console that runs even higher fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS. We achieved this on PS5 Pro with several key performance features.
  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.
PS5 Pro provides gamers with amazing graphics at high frame rates. You can hear Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro, discuss the key innovations from PS5 Pro in the following video presentation. This presentation provides a deep dive into the key performance features that make PS5 Pro truly special.

Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games.

Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported.

It’s humbling to see how game creators have embraced the latest technology from PS5 Pro, and several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features. These games can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label within their title.

Some games you can look forward to include blockbuster hits from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, such as Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.

We kept the look of the PS5 Pro consistent with the overall PS5 family of products. You’ll notice the height is the same size as the original PS5, and the width is the same size as the current PS5 model to accommodate higher performance specs. Players can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, or swap out console covers when they become available.

PS5 Pro fits perfectly within the PS5 family of products and is compatible with the PS5 accessories currently available, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore. The user interface and network services will also remain the same as PS5.

The PS5 Pro console will be available this holiday at a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY (includes tax).

It will include a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and a copy of Astro's Playroom pre-installed in every PS5 Pro purchase. PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the currently available Disc Drive for PS5 separately.

PS5 Pro will launch on November 7, 2024 and will be available at participating retailers and directly from PlayStation at direct.playstation.com. Preorders will begin on September 26, 2024.

Our PS5 journey would not be possible without the millions of players that have supported us through the years and have shared with us their love of gaming. Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.

Finally, Sony also made available a First-look Report on PS5 Pro Games with a video below:

As always, history repeats: a next gen console comes out, then, 3/4 years later, the same console comes out again, but with reduced dimensions (slim version). Within a short time, the PRO version...

Obviously this is a marketing strategy that tempts you to buy something you actually already own. It can be smaller, more beautiful, more powerful ... OK, but in the end what matters are games and if a game is good it will remain good no matter which version (standard/slim/pro) you use.

If the price difference was contained I might justify the purchase for those who have never owned a PS5, but increasing the price by so much, in my opinion, will simply increase the second-hand prices of the standard version and limit the sales of the new version.

If I have to spend 800 euros on a console I already own then I'd rather put the money aside and wait for the real next gen ...

They can't even make it look like a good deal when it's their own product. They're showing comparisons and the only thing that looks better is the FPS when you know it's locked on the base PS5.

No one that owns a base PS5 should upgrade and those without one should just build a PC for a bit more of the cost which you can reason you'd spend more anyways when you account for a PS+ yearly subscription. $700 is just spitting on your consumers with these piss-poor upgrades. My 2 cents.

it is fair to say the PS5 Pro features looks good, especially the better frame rates and ray tracing. That said, the $700 price tag feels pretty steep and i am sure it will be more in my country.

I’m not sure if this deal worth it, especially since most of the games mentioned can already be played on the original PS5.

They're really getting to the point where I just can't justify the high asking price along with all of the other fees that come with console gaming, such as the pay to play online, $70 games, and this with the lack of a disc drive.

Those things add up where it just doesn't make financial sense to invest in the ecosystem. PC gaming has its own challenges and annoyances (and higher up front cost), but it's probably the better deal in the long run.

Who am I kidding? I'm just going to play old games most of the time anyways.

Australian $1200 for console with no disc reader while second hand PS5 with disc reader goes for around 400, triple A releases go for around 90-100 at big retailers like JB. The only hope that Sony has is that the GTA6 hype will actually improve the sale number.

Even then second hand PC parts from current gen might be cheap enough to outpace the PS5 Pro's processing power, hurting it's sales the moment R* releases on PC and all the mods and custom maps are available.

I was holding back on getting a ps5 for the pro but was utterly disappointed there's no real great difference and at that price point I would buy another pc instead.

Don't understand why they wouldn't have a physical disk and backward compatibility would be a great feature.

920€ for a PS5 Pro that can read disks. Well, Sony as made a bold move. What Microsoft and Nintendo are going to do?

For Nintendo, we can be sure that their Switch 2 is going to cost from ~350 to ~500€. Is Microsoft going to get a mid-gen "pro" console? If PS5 Pro is 920€ (with BR), what PS6 will cost?

But where is this all supposed to lead if the PS5 Pro already costs over 900 euros with the drive, how much will the PS6 cost? Sony has to come up with something so that you don't lose the joy of playing anymore

The announcement of the PS5 pro is a very interesting one, with the majority of people already with a PS5 what is the incentive for them to upgrade to the Pro.

Yes there are benefits with improved graphics but who actually has an 8K TV? Maybe I am way off here but I would rather be able to play games from multiple different companies that spend a good 900 euros on a single console.

It is also difficult if you have multiple kids because they will all want something different to play. This is why I love having older generation consoles but also show them the classics games that I played as a child (yes I am prob trying to relive my youth through them) But seeing the joy on their faces is priceless.

Like many others I agree that these games companies could well be pricing themselves out of the market when people can build a decent PC or buy older consoles.

Having said all of this there is a market for this and I know that a lot of kids will be asking for them for Xmas with the potential for scalpers to be making a good profit of these.
