It'd be a start, we'd know more than we do now :D

That would lead us nowhere, if we knew the lowest downgradable firmware that wouldn't tell us anything unless someone manually edited his flash to say some custom number the person wanted which is obviously a VERY low chance. I am not sure how to go about this because if he tries to install a CFW it could brick his PS3 if he never had a CFW flash. That is his only way though. I honestly doubt he is on CFW.

That makes two of us, which is why I'm doing 'Tier 1' support, getting him to provide us as much information as possible and try everything 'easy' that I can think of.

Then I'll bring in 'Tier 2' support guys like racer0018 or misiozol once I can't go any further myself... welcome to troubleshooting 101, it saves the 'Tier 2' guys loads of time! ;)

There isn't any secret 'Tier 2' people are holding from us. There are simply no ways to see if he is on CFW other than installing some kind of CFW and it works. Only 1 option.

just got done reading your guys' replies... with that info... I have a new question... how difficult is it to un-brick the ps3 if it wasn't previously jailbroken?

an edit for the type of PS3... it is a 2nd gen FAT model...non backward compatible. Sorry about the mistake in the original question

Do you have a hardware flasher? If so, you may be able to get a valid dump (assuming you don't have one already) from the bricked PS3 and then unbrick the console using that.

I dont currently have one...but do plan on ordering one in the next couple weeks. I have a few PS3's that I am resurrecting from the grave. I plan on attempting to jailbreak at least one of them.

being that it isn't currently bricked, and I'm planning to get a flasher. it'll probably be a safer bet to load OFW first, being that it as asking for 4.78 or higher. then I can always downgrade it later.

Are there any specific firmware versions 4.78+ that I should aim for that will make downgrading easier?
