Following the App.pkg Database Mod, PS4 4.55 Update Blocker HEN and recent PS4HEN VTX release, PlayStation 4 developer @CelesteBlue made available via Twitter PS4 PKG2USB to dump and run Fake PKGs on USB with both 4.05 / 4.55 Payloads by SiSTRo. :D

Download: PS4 PKG2USB (Latest Release) / PKG2USB 4.55_USB.zip / GIT

Available on the latest release page are a ps4-pkg2usb.cfg configuration file, ps4-pkg2usb_405.bin and ps4-pkg2usb_455.bin payloads.

:alert: Before getting overly excited, this is some PKG2USB Feedback by Stooged for those considering giving it a try.

Here's a brief usage guide from e✘treme-Modding.de, to quote roughly translated:

Today we present you PKG2USB, a Payload (based on Vortex’s Dumper) to dump and run Fake PKGs on USB.

1) works only with fpkg
2) game/app must be before installed as usally on internal
3) copy ps4-pkg2usb.cfg to usb root
4) edit config title_id with game/app title_id
5) always use the same usb port when you installed game
6) to reinstall game to internal hdd, remove and reinstall as usal
tip: if you still have the pkg and you want to avoid wasting time waiting for the file to be copied from the payload on the usb HDD, copy the pkg to X:\PS4\CUSAxxxxx\app.pkg

Thanks for the payload, have tested it on 4.05 and it works perfect. Keep in mind that the app.pkg must be on internal hdd, so it’s similar to my Database Mod but with this payload you don’t have to edit the app.db anymore. Great work !

Spoiler

And from the README.md, to quote: PS4 PKG2USB – Dump and run Fake PKGs on USB – 4.05/4.55 Payload by SiSTRo

This is a PS4 payload (based on Vortex's dumper) to dump and run fake PKGs on USB.
  • USB drive must be formatted to exFAT
  • works only with fpkg (not official pkg)
  • game/app have to be before installed as usually on internal storage
  • copy ps4-pkg2usb.cfg to usb root
  • edit config title_id with game/app title_id
  • always use the same USB port that when you installed game
  • to reinstall game to internal hdd, remove and reinstall as usual
Tip: If you still have the pkg and you want to avoid wasting time waiting for the file to be copied from the payload on the USB HDD, copy the pkg to X:\PS4\CUSAxxxxx\app.pkg

External USB drive storage for 4.05 and 4.55 PS4 homebrews and games is now a thing ! exFAT drive is way easiest to manage, no encryption, so maybe faster than native USB, and works also on 4.05 !!! Credits go to SiSTRO and xvortex and anonymous. (not me)
I recall that I didn't do anything in this project except releasing it. I host source code so people will improve it.
Cheers to everyone who shared the news tips in the ongoing PS4 4.55 Holy Grail (PS4HEN) discussion thread earlier on! :beer:

Ok everyone I just tested this and it works. Here's what happens --
It actually works but a strange thing happens. Instead of reporting more free space the PS4 reports more capacity.

Check image, the available capacity increased by 50Gb on trying it. Previously it was reporting about 890Gb and now its ~950 which everyone knows is way more than the actual formatted capacity.

The reported capacity of PS4's internal HDD will be offset by the amount of size of pkgs moved using this tool. I.e. if 500gb worth of pkgs are moved, the capacity will be shown as 1.5Tb on a 1Tb console.

I'm wondering if it will be possible to make a single payload with every feature of the ones out now. Like we have one payload including HEN, ftp, usbpkg, etc.

Anyone knows if that is possible ?

Here's a short tutorial on how to use pkg2usb:

1. Copy pkg to your external usb. (ex.CUSA00001.pkg)

2. Connect it to your PS4 and install the pkg via debug menu.

3. Now remove the usb, go to your PC. On the root of your USB create a folder structure like this:
PS4/CUSA00001/ (PS4 and CUSA00001 are both folders)

4. Move the CUSA00001.pkg inside PS4/CUSA00001. Rename CUSA00001.pkg to app.pkg

5. The final path should look like this:
Code:
USB:/PS4/CUSA00001/app.pkg

6. Open ps4-pkg2usb.cfg and make it look like this: (make sure to replace CUSA0001 with the id of the package you want to move)

Code:
;
; ps4-pkg2usb configuration file. Copy it to your USB disk root.
;
; Coded by SiSTRo - Cedits to XVortex & Anonymous
;

; Installed app/game title id
title_id=CUSA00001

; 0 - Do not copy app.pkg from hdd
; 1 - Copy app.pkg from hdd to usb
copy=0

; Notification interval in s. (0 - disables notifications)
notify=60

; Turn off the console when it has completed (0/1)
shutdown=0

7. Save the file to the root of your external usb and eject the external usb from PC.

8. Connect it to the PS4 > Open PS4 exploit and send the payload ps4-pkg2usb_455.bin

9. It should look for the installed pkg and create a symlink. This should take max 10 seconds.

You should probably be able to do all this via FTP without needed to remove and connect each time to PC for every package. I am in process of testing that.

- Before moving the game: 107.8 GB / 861.6 GB

- After moving the game with the connected external hard drive: 107.8 GB / 873.8 GB

- With the external hard drive disconnected: 107.8 GB / 873.8 GB

- With the external hard drive disconnected looking through FTP the file "app.pkg" is no longer in the internal one.

- In the options of the game with the external hard disk disconnected says that the size is 6.46 MB.

My summary:
The trick just works, the file is not inside, it's just a symbolic link, plus it increases the maximum size of the internal hard disk to compensate that the available space does not change.

@Mikeads As I said, this is better than extended support since you can use the external HDD in exFAT instead of having to format it to the PS4 format itself, since then that extended hard disk would be disabled to move the pkg and install them later.

I put exploit folder in 4.55 exploits folder but when I launch I get system not vulnerable. I am self hosting from windows pc. any ideas on what I am doing wrong? thank you

@Tanmay007 is correct.
Xvortex, u're the man.
it needs a bit more testing, but for now, it seems i was wrong, it isn't useless.
edit : i'm gonna fill an hdd to its fullness, and lets see what happens when i exceed its maximum capacity, stay tuned.
