From what I can gather it's basically manipulating the files or region, some call it making a 'Frankenstein' game (I'd probably call it a "Game-Specific Fix") while @albatawy calls them an 'Exclusive Method' for the PS3 games that require special modifications to work.

Here is one example of an Exclusive Method by @albatawy with another HERE from him, some others jumping in sharing them HERE, HERE and at the bottom of THIS post also.
