This weekend console hacking scene profiteer GaryOPA reports that PS Vita scene game dumps from groups including BigBlueBox, VBL and PSiCO are beginning to surface for his boss Max Louarn's latest DRM-infected product known as the Cobra BlackFin.

So besides Max and Gary's latest attempt persuade unsuspecting sceners into wasting money on a useless product like they did many times before such as with the True Blue PS3 dongle (while real sceners were reverse-engineering it, warning the public of their 'max con' job, defeating their DRM protection, releasing N0DRM free fixes, sharing source code openly and finally leaking the True Blue PS3 disc BCA codes) what is the Cobra BlackFin?

We have reported on the Cobra BlackFin dongle for the PlayStation Vita a few times, and even tho there is not much info out there on how it all works, and no full review, it does seem to be slowly shipping out to resellers now, and being used by some Vita handheld owners, and now a old-school warez scene group has started to slowly release proper dumps from various retail Vita games out into the wild west of the underground 'net for people to grab that don't want to go thru all the problems in making their own personal backups.

Well here we are again, after 4 months of silence :) Today we bring you the first PS Vita game, dumped by the "BlackFin" from Team Cobra !

After our first attempt to release a PS Vita game we saw a lot of criticism from public devs about the way it was pred. So in this nfo we want to clear up a few things and give some insight about what was and what will be in the future for the PS Vita scene.

-- About the license situation --

1. To the lightbulb on twitter:

We don't get your understanding of "unique" when it comes to the license files for PS Vita games, but when the SAME file, from the SAME game, with the SAME Game ID differs in almost all regards, compared from two cartridges, we don't see how they can NOT be unique.

2. To the vitadevwiki / public scene site admins:

The understanding of the licenses are pretty much zero and we can only guess what information they might hold, so if any effort should be put into the PS Vita hacking right now, it has to go towards figuring out the structure and information these .rif files hold. It would be awesome if public discussions could take place on your platforms.

3. To our fellow competitors:

We would advise you to take extra caution with releasing PS4 and PS Vita titles because of what we said above. We got word from two independent sources that the licenses from both platforms COULD be tracked by Sony with information like first time activation and current console / user ID. As long as you never played the game or had the console online where you played it on, we would see no problem in releasing it.

-- Suggestions to Team Cobra --

1. The dumping process needs to be fixed, it's very unstable sometimes and seems to be related to the distance between the card emulator and the BT dongle?
2. Sometimes writing a game to the card emulator ends up in an error, and we could not identify the cause for this issue. You might want to investigate it and come up with a fix :)
3. In addition to 2) we (and probably a lot of users) would also welcome a seperate piece of software which can write to your microSD card filesystem (CEFS) with a standard card reader, rather than the BlackFin one.
4. Please enable individual file dumping from within the BlackFin software.
5. It would be awesome if users could check the currently available game carts which are online, without having the BT dongle plugged in.
6. A companion software for smartphones with bluetooth would be awesome, so people can authenticate their games on the go. PS Vita is a handheld after all right ? ;)
7. Open your servers !! :D

-- To the archive / catalogue / preservation scene --

1. The BlackFin dumps don't seem to be 100% complete.
2. The dump sizes look a bit strange, the only two we could identiy right now are: 1.958.739.968 Bytes and 3.959.422.976 Bytes The BlackFin Software lists them as 2GB and 4GB, whereas those bytes converted are around 1,82GB and 3,68GB. We don't know what might be missing here (if even).
3. It contains custom information from the BlackFin at 0x2000.

-- To the keen devs --

1. The filesystem on a PS Vita game cart seems to be exFAT, check 0x8000 for the beginning of the partition. If anyone could come up with a extractor, that would be very appreciated.

-- For the previous and (hopefully) coming PS Vita scene --

1. We will dump the games as *.psv, because the dumps are not conform to any ISO standard and don't seem to be 1:1 raw binary dumps either. After *.nds, *.3ds, *.wud, etc. this should be fine ;)
2. If anyone else out there pres PS Vita games, please include the game ID in the nfo, so the good private souls and Team Cobra can invest in those games to be hosted for authentification in the future.
3. We request a nuke for our own release: Uncharted_Golden_Abyss_EUR_MULTI5_READNFO_PSV-PSiCO Because the expected exploit to play those never happened and we now have a working solution by Team Cobra.

Shoutout to BBB: Touch.My.Katamari.USA.PSV-BigBlueBox - should follow this fate.

So there you have it finally after all these years, proper working PlayStation Vita Game Rips are appearing on the underground 'net by a scene group for usage by those that have already bought a Cobra BlackFin dongle for their Sony handheld, and normally we don't publish full long .nfo's like this, but being the first release, and also the fact the group published alot of useful info and tips and things that should be now discussed in their .nfo, its time to get the balling rolling and properly build up the Vita Scene finally.

      Well here we are, the first PS Vita NVG game cartridge dump ! :)

      The contents you find in this release come pre-decrypted without the
      pesky PFS encryption layer.
      The reason behind this is the fact that the next logical step in Vita
      hacking is to touch the kernelspace and patch it, so it doesn't check
      the signatures and licenses.
      De-/encryption takes places in whole different area of the system which
      would require additional exploitation, which is currently not on the
      horizon.
      So we decided to pre this release in a decrypted form without any
      licenses, because this data is unique and not needed anyway in case
      this (and the following) dump(s) become playable in the future.
      This is also common in the 3DS scene, so please don't cry because of
      "incomplete" dumps, the game assets and executables are all in place.

Funniest Thing is vhbl ... well crafted entrypoint that ends up abusing pthreads per # of threads in order to install said exploit and run it
I and my crew have followed cobra know who they are n the masks they hide behind they are nothing more then money making scums that say one thing do another.

They give ppl src codes n say that's the source code but trueth is its not it these are only a few of the masks they hide behind.

In the past they only have responded to us not realizing who we were nor did they understand what we were doing but ppl shod be aware it's monitor warez even files in ******* have the features to monitor.

When these scums come out from there hiding and deal with ppl instead of having others watch for them like we know they do

Then we will release there crap just to shove it down there throats just to watch them scream and beg for more.

In the case where the guest contains multiple kernels, the one with the highest version number is chosen. To extract arbitrary kernels from the disk image, see guestfish(1). To extract the entire /boot directory of a guest, see virt-copy-out(1).

--cache DIR sets the directory to use/check for cached template files. If not set, defaults to either $XDG_CACHE_HOME/virt-builder/ or $HOME/.cache/virt-builder/.

I would have to say that no I don't think that they are sending me a device to test because I haven't heard from them or gotten anything in a long time. I don't know if they said, we'll people are getting close to opening this up without the need for this device and then just stopped it or what.

I haven't read any reviews on it and I haven't heard of anyone in my circle to say that they have seen one working or even played around with one. I'm not surprised considering since then free developments such as Vitamin and PKGDecrypt for PS Vita game backups surfaced... don't fret though, they're probably working on a PS4 Re-DRM dongle. :cautious:
Look on github the answer is there in the src codes various names but style never changes. have to love arm lmfao ashamed no parallel on a system that actually supports it. these are all fpga devises
 
It comes down to money a lot of the time. Plus the thing is that people want to play backups of games, they want it bad and will pay for it. If something came out tomorrow that could play backups of games and allow this to happen on a system, there would be a line of people wanting tomorrow or buy this. 50 to 150 dollars people would be lined up to buy it and they couldn't make it fast enough. that is what drives these people to make things like this. as long people will buy this, there will be someone to make it. why release something that you could sell and make money off of. It's sad but that is the way it is.
 
I would reeeeeely like if I could store multiple games on vita console in any way , it's true pain in ass to carry all those cartridges and remember "do not forget or you will not play" that sucks or even worse loose them.

Vita Reverse Engineering Leak (Cobra Blackfin) – Part 1

A foreword from wololo: I was recently contacted by someone who claims to be the main tech person behind the Cobra blackfin project. The hacker provided substantial proof that he is who he claims to be, although I’d be lying if I said I still have the technical skills today to confirm that all the analysis he’s provided is 100% valid. Today’s release, and potentially the ones to follow, will allow the scene to go through the files and confirm the legitimacy and importance (or lack thereof) of this leak.

The hacker states he has 76GB of reverse engineering data related to the PS Vita (the bulk of it being dumps, logs, but also, he says, some juicy stuff), the result of 4 years of work on the cobra blackfin project.

Due to not being paid for his work by the owner of Cobra team, the developer has decided to make his files public for the scene, with the double goal of 1) providing interesting stuff to the vita community and 2) attempting to get paid for his work. Because of this, it is possible, if he reaches an agreement with Cobra, that the hacker will not send me all the files.

My part of the agreement with him is that I will publish his announcements and release his files here as he sends them to me. I do it in the hope that this could lead to interesting code/discoveries for the psvita scene, and also because I don’t like the idea of a developer not being paid for their work. This is independent of my opinion on backups devices such as the Cobra Blackfin, which I believe I’ve made clear multiple times.

This first release is “minor” but still contains interesting stuff. From my perspective it is mostly here as a “warning shot”, proving he is not kidding with the upcoming leaks. The hacker intends to release more interesting parts of the project progressively.

Below are an announce and notes from the hacker, as well as download links for the first part of his work. I have left this mostly untouched except for a few typos and formatting (you can find the original notes and announce documents in the downloadable archive):

I developed the BlackFin device for the Vita, on contract for Cobra.

Unfortunately, I was stupid and too trusting, and the contract was for payment on delivery of the product and the guy running the Cobra business sc*** me of over 4 years of work by not paying after I delivered the product.

The BlackFin didn’t sell, so he decided that he wasn’t going to pay me, citing *** excuses to justify his theft of my money, my hard work and my intellectual property. The most baffling thing is that after one year of fighting/negotiating/requesting my money which he still refuses to pay (but promises he’ll pay it “someday”), he still tries to argue to me that he is a man of his word and he isn’t a lying and thieving scumbag.

I have told him that if I do not get paid, then he is forfeiting all intellectual property rights on my work on this project and that I will do what I want with it. I have decided that what I want to do is to release it to the community. There is about 76GB of data to sift through, so these releases will be done over the next few months, so I can take the time to prepare worthwhile releases for everyone to enjoy.

This first release is minor and it’s a tool that emulates an MMC host controller and can be used to talk to a vita card. My notes on the authentication mechanism of the Vita game cards is also released here as well as some nice XRay scans of the game cards. It should be interesting to see what the community can do with this information.

A message to hackers out there: Stay away from Cobra, stay away from anyone who thinks so highly of himself that he is robbing you while trying to convince you he is the good guy.

A message to the thief: Stop crying, you’ve had plenty of time to fix your mistake. A year has passed since you decided not to pay me for work done and delivered, 6 months has passed from the last deadline I gave you, and 2 months from the deadline that you gave me yourself for rectifying your mistake. The time for pitiful excuses is past. If you want me to stop, then pay right away, otherwise just shut up about it.

Notes + content of the archive

This release is the first of many, the files here are to help test/debug some of the stuff on the vita GC (game card).

Most of these files have not been touched in years, so their information might be outdated, or the code might not compile, or may need small fixes for it to work properly. It’s all released as is with no guarantees.

Here’s the run down of the attached files :
  • vitacardxray: an XRay scan of the Vita GC, it wasn’t very useful and I never did anything with it, but it can be a nice addition to some wiki page somewhere.

  • MMC_BB : This is an MCC host emulator written using Bit-Bang mode on an FTDI chip. I had soldered wires to a GC and used an FTDI UM232H to communicate with it. The code is old and potentially buggy. I know that I re-used that code a couple of years later and it wasn’t working as well as it did 5 years ago, maybe it was because of cross talk or a poorer soldering job. Either way, I had to comment out some parts in the ReceiveData function and lower the baudrate.. this might not be necessary anymore, I suggest you test and see what works for you, you may need to understand its code and debug it before it becomes useful.
In any case, you should of course read the source code to figure out what it does exactly. There is a ‘usage’ if you run it without arguments, but that’s outdated, there’s a few commands that were added to the app but not to the usage, read the source to know what they do. This is what I used to brute force the GEN_CMD behavior and some things are hardcoded in it as well (like with the ‘read’ command, the sector to read is hardcoded in the source code, or whether the card is 2GB or 4GB is hardcoded with a #define), so really, consider this a “developer tool” for quick testing/hack jobs, rather than a usable tool for most people.

It may or may not be useful, but it will probably help at least testing the GC authentication from a PC when it comes times to implement an open source solution.

One thing I remember is that you need to do ‘./MMC init’ to init the card before you try to read/auth/whatever from it and that the unbrick command was to unbrick a card but I don’t really know if it ever actually worked (a card will brick/lock up if you fail too many auth attempts, but I think it unbricks itself on its own after some time). Also, the Vita will reject a card that answers 0x0000 to the 0xc2 command right away (a card that was already authenticated) so you need to unauth a card before you can use it with the vita again.

One way to use read/write tests is to wire 3.3v to the VCC pin of the card, then tape over it to isolate it, insert GC into the vita for the auth to take place, then remove the card, since it stays powered from your ftdi (or other external source), you can then read/write to it as much as you want. Of course, write is protected for the actual game partition, but you can play/test that if you wish to.

Notes and logs:

The full.log is a full boot log captured using a logic analyzer and the LA data analyzed through a script (not in the release) to show every command sent and received by the card between the Vita and the GC. We can easily see in it the SD init commands (which go unanswered) followed by the MMC commands (which init the card), then the regular sequence of CID/CSD/EXT_CSD, followed by the enablement of high speed and 4 bit data mode, then the GEN_CMD auth commands then the card sectors being read in various ways by the Vita. I believe this was an Uncharted game and the log continues until the game was launched.

Note that I changed the card’s serial number and removed the data from the auth commands in case it is identifiable.

The GEN_CMD.log file is the GEN_CMD auth commands extracted from the full log (before I cropped it and with the data slightly modified so it wouldn’t decrypt to valid content anymore), it’s useful to follow up on that file when trying to understand how the authentication works.

Note the “Command” here is actually “transaction id” and the “Data arg” is the actual command code.

The authentication.txt is my interpretation of how auth works and the results of brute forcing every command/TID combinations. It’s probably not exhaustive due to how the GC acts as a state machine (some commands may not works until auth is successful), but it’s useful and shows many commands in there that the GC supports but which are not used by the vita itself. I wrote most of it in 2012, and the “Card authentication” paragraph sometime in 2014, so it may not be accurate/up-to-date.

With a vita CFW, you should be able to simulate the auth from a Vita and send/receive modified auth messages (does changing the 0xa1 data cause the 0xa2 request to fail, or not until the 0xa3 command, for example), although I believe that with the F00D command sequence, motoharu has already discovered which data is dependent on which, so it may not be extremely useful anymore.

:idea: Although it seems like Wololo is siding with an opportunist in an extortion attempt to get money he feels owed from Cobra for a useless for-profit device, the more important message here is:

If educated sceners stop buying these re-DRM devices in the first place, the companies behind them like Cobra will no longer pay and these douchebags will have to get a real job instead of trying to bilk sceners out of money for what should be free and open-source in the scene... karma for the guy masquerading as a hero now releasing what he initially attempted to profit from as a villain.
