Many may recall PS3 developer @deank of DeanBG.com's multiAVCHD homebrew application that, with help from Open Manager 1.0 source code, was modified and transformed into the popular PS3 backup game manager known as MultiMAN today. :giggle:

"In the spirit of open source (when using other peoples code)" as modrobert put it, in 2011 @deank released the long overdue MultiMAN Source Code (source-archive.zip - 79.94 MB) with some unofficial repositories available on Github from other PS3 scene developers including Twinaphex.

Since then Joonie86 of Team Rebug also made available Cobra code updates for 4.81 and 4.82, although current MultiMAN PS3 source code remains elusive... so if anyone runs across a repository for it feel free to share!

That said, with the official announcement that MultiMAN PS4 is now in development comes the big question many PlayStation 4 developers and homebrew enthusiasts are left wondering... will PS4 MultiMAN be open source and freely shared with the scene on a public repository such as Github?

MultiMAN PS4 in Development by DeanK, Open Source Code on Github 3.jpgHere's what @deank had to say thus far via STLcardsWS:

"After reading here and there I figured that Gold and Silver editions should come with 4.55 firmware. Luckily there is a pc store in my building and yesterday I got myself a Silver Edition (2 x dualshocks) - it came with 4.55 :)

Then with the help of @Joonie I was brought up to speed :)

Well mM for PS4 won't be anything like the PS3 version because of the different concepts between both generations, but I'll figure out some useful things to implement."

@WIENERDRIZZLE this is not a ps4hen app. As I mentioned earlier, you cannot make the jailbreak persistent unless you have CFW. See, multiMAN is a homebrew app which means it's an fpkg with unsigned code just like any other fpkg. Now to be able to run unsigned code, you need to load HEN first and to be able to load HEN, you need to run the webkit exploit through the network. This step cannot be bypassed because it's the point of entry. Only if we have CFW can this step be bypassed because a CFW disables all checks and you would be able to run unsigned code without having to load HEN through a webkit exploit first.

multiMAN on PS4 is going to be different from the multiMAN that we know on PS3, a fact that @deank has already confirmed. First of all, don't expect it to be a backup manager because backups are currently installed on the PS4 as pkgs, so you don't need a backup loader, unless someone figures out a way to load backups as disk images like on PS3, but I don't think this is possible because unlike on PS3, disk games on PS4 contain a pkg which installs on the HDD. 2nd, don't expect it to load HEN automatically (or manually), you won't be able to run multiMAN unless you load HEN through the webkit exploit first.

Here's what I expect multiMAN to be able to do on PS4:
  1. File Manager
  2. Multimedia Player (possibly)
  3. The ability to load other payloads such as FTP, DB-SG Backup, Enable VR etc...
So I expect it to be a multi-toolbox for PS4, but you would still need to load HEN through webkit first to be able to run it, just like any other fpkg.

It will just remove the need for other payloads through webkit. You would just need HEN and then you would be able to load the other payloads from multiMAN.

We'll wait and see, only time will tell...

@WIENERDRIZZLE easier said than done. The web browser patch changes a value in the registry. There's no value in registry that you can change to load an exploit or inject a HEN payload, so you cannot "somehow build the web exploit into the permanent web browser patch", that's a nonsense thing to say... The webkit exploit can only be loaded via the web browser, period. It's called "webkit" for a reason.

Until a non-webkit exploit is found, there's no way to load an exploit and inject a HEN payload other than through the web browser.

@mschumacher69 one thing i dont get is why the fixation on webkit instead of other methods. for example, to jailbreak the 3DS you use a specially made mp3 file as an entry point. and that jailbreak is permanent. why not try to find other methods of entry, like the media player app for example or a save game like the original Xbox used?

my only guess is that the web browser is somehow easier to find exploits in it than other apps, possibly due to the fact that it interacts with "external unplanned factors" a lot and that sony has to release parts of its source code because of the license. add to that the fact that very few people are actually working on/searching for any kind of an exploit (like, less than a dozen). that is my guess, but i am curious to hear what others think :)

@FFTHEWINNER it's not a fixation, it's just that this is the exploit that has been found so far. It's not like exploits are lying there in the open and hackers can pick and choose which exploit to use. If it were that easy, the PS4 would have been jailbroken a long time ago and they would have created a permanent jailbreak already.

The PS4 is a highly secure system and it's very difficult to exploit it. Yes webkit (being open source) might be the weak link here and might be the easiest to exploit.

@mschumacher69
you're just assuming stuff, let the time flow and in the future we'll see what people will come up with. i'm not even so sure that the PS4 is a "highly secure system" when quite some hackers already release webkits and kexploits.

not that i underestimate their doings, but they're not even grouped as far as i know, people independently release exploits. as of why stuff aren't being expanded is of other reasons i can think of... for example laziness, or avoiding being in a spotlight for sony's attention, or in general supporting backups isn't that much acceptable, or the fear of facing something too great and not even starting. but time will flow and new stuff will probably be released.

Edit : same goes for your assumptions for multiman, it's not even released and you've summed all the application's features.
