Recently industry insider Tidux shared a link to an updated Sony patent (with another HERE), which means according to reports the PS5 may offer backwards compatibility and play PS4 games on the upcoming PlayStation 5. :D

To quote from PSU.com on this interesting discovery:

"PS5 backwards compatibility is looking a little more likely after a US patent was updated by Sony Interactive Entertainment America. Updated on February 13, it clearly states: “Backward compatibility testing of software in a mode that disrupts timing.”

This isn’t confirmation that the PS5 will be able to play PS4 games, but it could be an indication that Sony is conducting some kind of backwards compatibility testing."

@Fimo PS4 Pro and Xbox One X are still 8th generation. that was clearly stated by their companies and they dont have any exclusive games.

and i couldnt care less about seeing graphics in 64K let alone 4K lol. the fact is that the longer the generation the better it is for all sides:
  • Consumers get more games without having to buy another machine for them
  • Console manufacturers get more profit because of the falling chip prices for the console components
  • Developers are spared the high rise in development costs that happens every generation (a LOT of devs went bankrupt in generation transitions, especially in the 8 to 16 and 16 to 32 bit ones), and are also able to squeeze the untapped power in the current consoles out of them leading to a big improvement in graphics as compared to the console launch (best examples being the Sega Genesis, the PS2, and the Xbox 360).
So it is a win win for everybody.

Nah, they are just telling us about it doesnt mean it will release sooner than we thought. I will bet you that it will still see the light in 2021-2022. A ten years lifespan still makes sense. Fear not, people. (y)

x86 is really driving this console generation. Developers can develop a game once and then very easily port it to PS4, Xbone and PC. Furthermore, they stage the releases so that the PS4 and Xbone versions release a year before the PC versions so that people buy the game twice; once on release day, and once for the best version on PC. Double the profit for almost no effort. This approach also allows them to combat backups by having a year of console exclusivity where backups is hard/impossible before releasing on PC where it is inevitable.

The PS5 will be x86 based. The game and console developers won't want to give the benefits I said above up. If it's x86, backwards compatibility is trivially easy.

@azoreseuropa but according to the last tweet on the page the Dev Kits were sent early this year, and the average development time for a game is 2 years. doesnt that mean we (unfortunately)can expect the PS5 in 2020?

@PLAYER 1 so this same patent was used when the PS4 Pro launched?

Or PS3's backward compatibility?

Finally with Ryzen APUs we have enough processing power to emulate PS3?

Because frankly I don't see anything special with an x86 APU getting backward compatibility with another x86 APU.
