Hello World, PlayStation 5! <3 With the official PS5 Launch today, Sony recently made available a PS5 System Software / Firmware Update PS5UPDATE.PUP Version 20.02-02.20.00 (828 MB) alongside a Recovery / Reinstallation PS5UPDATE.PUP (960 MB) following yesterday's PS5 WebKit Open Source Software and confirmation of an in-app PS5 Web Browser (Sony previously confirmed the PS5 System doesn't include a dedicated Web browser application).

PS5 Scene developer @SilicaAndPina already determined via Twitter the correct PS5 XML Updater (updatelist.xml) for downloading the latest retail PS5UPDATE.PUP file, but if the link hash changes the current one can be obtained from Sony's PS5 System Software page... however, the jury is still out on a PS5 Recovery / Reinstallation PUP file XML Updater so for the time being the current one can also be downloaded from Sony's PS5 System Software page.

:alert: As always, DON'T UPDATE if you wish to use PS5 game backups and PlayStation 5 homebrew apps, emulators, etc whenever a PlayStation 5 Jailbreak Exploit arrives in the PS5 Scene.

 So what's NEW in the first public PS5 Firmware / System Software update?

All Sony's Official Page currently states is the following:

PS5 system software update

An update to the system software for PlayStation 5 consoles was released on 11/12/2020. For the best PlayStation experience, always update your PS5 console to the latest version of the system software. By updating, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability and enhanced security.

Update your PS5 console with the latest system software. You can also check out the features that are available in the update here. In addition, you can view the online user’s guide in the PS5 console's Settings menu. Version 20.02-02.20.00

It doesn't appear Sony put an official PlayStation 5 Changelog Page live yet similar to the ps4-updatefeature.html that shows the current PS4 OFW Update changes transparently, but according to geronimo_73 the unofficial PS5 OFW Update changes include:
  • This update fixes accessing PS4 Games saved on external storage once you plug it into the PS5's USB port
  • PS4 Games are now recognized and run without having to copy them to PS5 SSD
:note: How to update the PlayStation 5 System Software / Firmware:

While most PlayStation 5 Scene developers don't recommend it as Sony has a history of patching vulnerabilities that could lead to potential exploits for use in PS5 Jailbreaking, below are the instructions from Sony's Official Page, to quote:

Download PS5 system software update to console

If you can access the home screen but the system software update has failed, connect the PlayStation console to your router using a LAN cable and follow the steps below:
  1. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update.
  2. Select Update System Software.
Download PS5 update file

If your PS5 automatic download is stuck, restart the update.

Restart PS5 system software download on PS5

If your PS5 system software automatic download is stuck, please start again:
  1. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software.
  2. Select Update Using Internet.
If that fails, download the update file below to a USB drive, and follow the guide to install the file on your PS5 console.
If you are connected to PlayStation Network but cannot reach the home screen, start the console in Safe Mode and select Safe Mode option 3: Update System Software. If the update fails, please follow the instructions below.

Safe Mode on PlayStation 5

Safe Mode allows you to start your PlayStation console with only the most basic functions active. The Safe Mode options are designed to help you solve issues by rebuilding the console storage database, changing the resolution of your system or "hard" resetting the system to its factory settings.

Some Safe Mode options will result in the loss of data. Be sure to back up data to a USB drive or Cloud Storage before selecting these options.

What are the PS5 Safe Mode options?
  1. Restart PS5
Ends Safe Mode and restarts the PS5 console normally.
  2. Change Video Output
Changes the display resolution. This option can be helpful when troubleshooting issues with blank screens.
  3. Update System Software
Allows you to update the PS5 system software via direct download or USB storage device.
  4. Restore Default Settings
Restores the PS5 console to the default factory settings. Restoring Default Settings will not delete the saved data on your system storage.
  5. Rebuild Database
Scans the drive and creates a new database of all content on the system. Select this option if you are experiencing issues such as game freezes or frame rate drops.
  6. Reset PS5
Deletes all user data and restores the PS5 to its original state.
  7. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)
Deletes all user data and removes PS5 system software.
How do I start my PlayStation 5 in Safe Mode?
  1. Turn off your console by pressing the power button. The power indicator will blink for a few moments before turning off.
  2. Once the system is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after you hear the second beep — one beep will sound when you first press, and another seven seconds later.
  3. Connect the controller with the USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.
How can I update my PS5 system software using Safe Mode?

If your console has been offline for a long period, or lost connection to the internet during a system software update, you may need to manually update the system software. A manual update can be downloaded directly to your PlayStation or to an USB drive. Please follow the guide below.

I can't start my PlayStation 5 in Safe Mode

If you can’t start your console in Safe Mode using the steps detailed above, you may need to turn it off and back on again or check the cables. See the guide below for the steps to take before requesting a repair.

Manually update PlayStation 5 system software using a USB drive

PS5 Manual update requirements

  • DualSense wireless controller (PS5) or DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller (PS5/PS4) and a USB cable
  • PC or Mac computer connected to the internet
  • FAT 32 USB storage device, such as a USB flash drive — there must be approximately 460 MB of free space.
PS5: manually update system software
  1. Using a PC or Mac, create a folder named "PS5" on a USB drive formatted as FAT32. Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
  2. Visit the PS5 system software update page and select the "Update system software" section. Download the update file and save it in the "UPDATE" folder. Save the file as "PS5UPDATE.PUP".
  3. Plug the USB drive containing the file into your PS5 console.
  4. Start the PS5 console in Safe Mode: press and hold the power button, releasing after the second beep.
  5. Select Safe Mode option 3: Update System Software.
  6. Select Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If your PS5 console does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name using uppercase letters.

Download PS5 reinstallation file

Reinstalling your PS5 system software will delete all of the data contained in your PS5 system storage; this process is often referred to as a "factory" or "hard" reset.
How to reinstall PS5 system software from USB

Important!

Safe Mode option 7 (Reinstall System Software) will delete all data on your PlayStation console and will also replace the system software. Selecting this option should be considered as the last step when troubleshooting.

For those who missed it yesterday, @zecoxao confirmed on Twitter that BLSUnpack for PS4 also works for unpacking the PS5UPDATE.PUP file for PS5Scene devs to examine! :sneaky:

Based on previous reports HERE and HERE including the Tweets below, it appears there are currently the following PS5 Firmware / System Software versions to date (others may be intended for PS5 TestKits versus retail consoles):
Similar to PS3 and PS4, there are likely other PlayStation 5 Firmware / System Software versions included on PS5 game discs that can be dumped using Select PC Drives such as the LITE-ON DH-4O1S listed on PSDevWiki... we'll add mirrors as they're available.

Comments

Mine is a the EU flavor / model (CFI-1016A i.e. the Phys. disc version for UK/Europe). But anyway, this console is region-free (disc from any region will play and eventually update the FW as required) and the FW updates are universal, meaning they are the same all over the world for US/EU/JP. You can check that out from Sony directly by changing the region from EN-US, to EN-GB, to JA-JP where you are on the official FW download page.
