Sony Holographic Display Patent and Voxon Photonics 3D Demos
This past Tuesday Sony officially unveiled the PS5 console, and recently a Sony Holographic Display Screen patent from September 2019 surfaced leading to speculation on whether the new 3D technology could be utilized with their next-generation console or perhaps an upcoming PlayStation VR2 accessory for video gaming. 😃

To quote from LetsGoDigital.org who spotted the patent (sony-playstation-holographic-display.pdf):

"The great thing about this invention is that the hologram display will be compatible with a Sony PlayStation console. This makes it possible to experience PlayStation games as a 3D hologram and to play via your trusted DualShock controller. Incredible right ?!

But the possibilities don’t stop there, as the Microsoft (Xbox) and Nintendo (Switch) consoles are also mentioned as compatible devices. Moreover, the 3D screen may also be compatible with smartphones, virtual reality (VR) headsets and augmented reality (AR) headsets.

Whether Sony really intends to market such a holographic screen is as yet unknown."

Although Sony's 360 Degree Display Hologram Prototype (video below) is quite interesting, Voxon Photonics have kicked things up a notch with their own Voxon Photonics 3D Volumetric Display in 4K initially inspired by the hologram from the epic movie Star Wars.

RemotePlayPrototype: PS4 Remote Play Protocol Tool by Grill2010
Since his previous PSJoy Project for PC / Android devices and following the Chiaki free and open source PS4 Remote Play Client release from thestr4ng3r, PlayStation 4 homebrew developer @grill2010 recently updated his Github repository with RemotePlayPrototype... which is summarized as a 'quick and dirty tool to play around with the PS4 Remote Play protocol' for those who enjoy learning through tinkering. :geek:

Download: RemotePlayPrototype-master.zip / GIT

And from the README.md: RemotePlayPrototype info

Quick and dirty prototype to play around with the protocol. This is just a research project there is no support. If there are some enthusiastic reverse engineers out there it would be great if they could contribute to the project.

It was not implemented only by my own, we are a group of developers who are interested in making the remote play protocol open source. The base of the project was taken from https://github.com/grill2010/ps4-remote-play but it seems that the initial creator has unfortunately abandoned the project. I'm not a professional reverse engineer so in case you have some suggestions feel free to let us know.

And again, this is prototype code, it is ugly, and it could contain bugs.

Current status

INFO: REGISTER IS CURRENTLY NOT WORKING DUE RECENT FIRMWARE 7.0 UPDATE

The prototype is able to register with the PS4, it can perform the initial TCP handshake with the console and it can receive audio and video stream data. The streaming protocol uses a GMAC crypto context for incoming data and for outgoing data.

Unlike many other streaming services Sony also likes to encrypt their audio and video frames so you can't just process them unfortunately but you have to decrypt the payload...
PS5 Backward Compatibility May Not Support All PS4 Game Titles Yet
Previously we saw initial reports that PS5 backward compatibility with PS4, PS3, PS2 and PSX titles may be in development, followed by specifically PS4 Game Support on PlayStation 5 with definitive confirmation of the latter from Sony's Mark Cerny earlier this year. 🤗

According to a recent Famitsu.com article following the PS5 official announcement this week though, PS5 backward compatibility may not support all PS4 game titles by launch as it's currently a work in progress. 🧐

To quote, roughly translated: "About compatibility with PS4

At present, the official announcement of SIE is that the PS4 software compatibility, which is described as “Designed to achieve compatibility with PlayStation 4 titles,” we are verifying. Please wait for further information. It is premised on compatibility, but how far titles are targeted is undecided."
Next-Gen PlayStation VR Patent Hints at PS VR2 for PlayStation 5 Rumors
Last week we caught wind of potential PS5 AI Voice Assistance functionality after a Sony patent for PlayStation Assistant was spotted, and recently another patent (sony-ps5-vr-headset.pdf followed by sony-playstation-vr-system.pdf for a Telepresence System) surfaced via LetsGoDigital.org hinting at rumors of a Next-Gen PlayStation VR (PS VR2) for PlayStation 5. 🤩

A related patent can be found on the USPTO site, and below is a summary of the patent from Eurogamer.net to quote: "Images show plans for a PSVR headset which includes two front and one rear cameras. A further camera is included on a PlayStation Move-style controller.

These headset cameras are in addition to the LEDs installed around the current unit. A microphone will again be included. There's also the option for a further, separate camera to track the user's movements - like the PlayStation Camera or Kinect.

Most excitingly, perhaps, is the mention the headset could be operated wirelessly, with data sent and received by Bluetooth. This would mean the unit also includes its own power supply.

One final point is the ability for the headset to show a 'transparent' view - made possible by those front-facing cameras - so you could see your surroundings through the screen.

Images from both of these cameras can be displayed at the same time, one per eye, producing a stereoscopic 3D effect. Alternatively, they could be used to overlay AR effects on your real-world surroundings."...
